Anambra Police Arrest Man for Mother’s Murder, Foil Suicide Attempt in Ekwulobia



Ekwulobia, Anambra State – A 49-year-old man, Nnamdi Anyaji, was arrested by police in Ekwulobia on April 11, 2025, for the brutal murder of his 68-year-old mother, Mrs. Dorathy Anyaji. The incident, which occurred at their residence in Amudo Village, stemmed from a heated dispute over profits from a cassava business, with Nnamdi accusing his mother of dishonesty. Police recovered an axe at the scene, believed to be the murder weapon.


According to the Anambra State Police Command, operatives from the Ekwulobia Divisional Police Station responded to the scene at approximately 1:40 p.m. after Nnamdi attempted to take his own life following the killing. He is now in custody, under close watch to prevent further suicide attempts, and will face court charges upon completion of the investigation.


In a separate operation, police from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad in Enugu-Ukwu raided a drug den in Umuokpala Village, Orumba North LGA, on the same day. Acting on credible intelligence, the operatives arrested 12 male suspects, aged 20 to 29, involved in the sale and use of illicit drugs. The suspects, identified as Ifeanyi Bernard, Emmanuel Ugwu, Thankgod Kelechi, Umeh Chidera, Aguiyi Onyeka, Onyeka Martin, Festus Ihezie, Chibundu Nicholas, Solomon Obiefule, Chibundu Daniel, Neke Shedrack, and Nwazufu Kingsley, were found with dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and other incriminating items. All suspects and recovered exhibits have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further action.


SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Command, confirmed the incidents in a statement on April 13, 2025, underscoring the police’s commitment to tackling crime in the state.
