The Anambra State Police Command swiftly intervened to restore peace in Nri, Anaocha Local Government Area, following a political squabble that erupted during a campaign rally on Friday, August 1, 2025, at approximately 1:30 p.m.

The incident, which caused a brief disturbance, stemmed from the alleged removal of three campaign billboards belonging to one political party by supporters of another, escalating tensions in the area.

According to a statement by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, the clash was triggered when supporters of a political party reportedly pulled down the billboards, claiming non-payment of signage fees.

In response, the police promptly invited both parties for a peace meeting to de-escalate the situation. A mutual agreement was reached, with the offending party committing to replace the removed billboards without delay.

To ensure lasting resolution and uphold the agreement, Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD, directed the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Political Desk in Awka. The transfer aims to facilitate a discreet investigation to verify compliance with the pact or address any underlying issues.

CP Orutugu urged political actors and their supporters to conduct their activities peacefully and within the confines of the law, emphasizing the need for civility during political engagements. The police command reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and order across Anambra State as political activities intensify.

The swift intervention by the Anambra State Police Command has been commended by residents of Nri, who expressed relief at the restoration of calm. The ongoing investigation by the SCID is expected to provide clarity on the incident and prevent future occurrences.
