I want to bring government closer to the people - Comrade Ezeokafor
One of Aguata's promising politicians, Comrade Ebube Ezeokafor has indicated interest to vie for the position of Counselor, Ekwulobia Ward 1 in the forthcoming LG election scheduled for. In this exclusive interview with Udala Media, Comrade Ebube shares some intimate thoughts surrounding his ambition.
Let us meet you; your name, place of origin, qualifications and training, designation presently?
I am Comrade Ebube Ezeokafor, from Nkono village, Ekwulobia in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. This is where I live and work. I am an artist. Into Interior and exterior decoration arts. CEO, I O Ezeokafor Construction Company. I do business here in Ekwulobia.
How did you get involved in politics?
I joined politics because I love serving the people. It is my calling. As early as when I was 26 years, I had become the chairman of my kindred. At the same age I became the secretary general of my village which I still am till date. And my village also sent me to represent them at Ekwulobia Town Union government and made me to hold the office of the Welfare Officer. That is how I joined politics. I found that the only way I can serve the public better is to join a political party that can provide me the platform to give the best of what God gave me and bring government nearer to the people.
Why are you interesting in being a counsellor for Ekwulobia ward 1?
My motive for vying for this position is because I have seen that the youths need someone they can easily access, someone who knows their pains. In my ward, there are a lot of ways to engage the youths positively without political back up. In some rural areas there is no good access roads and no good drainage systems. We have rural areas that have not felt government presence and the onus lies on people like us who are on ground and can bring government closer to the people. Many of our health facilities lack workers. These are some of the things I know I am better positioned and equipped to bring to the notice of the government as counsellor if elected.
What are some things that need urgent government attention in your ward that you would like to impact on as counsellor?
The area of youth involvement in government is one area my ward is lagging behind. I am all for a government that has youth programmes by the youths and for the youths. Local artisans and farmers in my ward need to be fully engaged. Instead of spending huge amounts bringing strangers to build our roads and gutters and suchlike, we need to train our youths in such skills and engage them as well . We need to make sure that our youths are fully involved. We lack skilled youths in my ward and I am passionate to change this status quo and this is why I am involved in politics to gain the fiat that would help me do it.
Do you think party affiliation determines the effectiveness of an elected officer?
Ideally, the antecedents of the politician should be the determining factor as to how effective one would be in office. But in our climes, we have seen how political party has continued to influence the activities of the political office holders. APC has come to stay and I believe that the people of Anambra State are beginning to see that our politics should be about the individual and his capacity. Personally, I believe that Anambra State is ripe for any party to win elections as our people are beginning to emphasise on the capacity and antecedents of the individuals and not their party.
