Anambra Police Respond to Viral Video, Warn Against Misinformation

 


The Anambra State Police Command has issued a stern warning against the spread of misinformation following a trending video that allegedly accuses the police, the Nigeria Customs Service, and prominent individuals, including Prince Arthur Eze of Ukpo and the traditional ruler of Ukwulu, of subverting justice. The command described the video as a deliberate attempt to tarnish the reputation of the police and respected stakeholders, promising to invoke cybercrime laws to address the issue.


In a press statement released today by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command clarified its stance on the video, which features a man, purportedly on a hospital bed, making claims of injustice. The police dismissed the video as an orchestrated effort to garner public sympathy and divert attention from an ongoing investigation.


According to SP Ikenga, the police acted swiftly in the case referenced in the video, arresting two suspects, recovering arms, and preventing further escalation. The command emphasized that its actions were not influenced by any individual or group but followed standard inter-agency protocols. The suspects, who are personnel of the Nigeria Customs Service, were handed over to their agency for internal disciplinary proceedings, a routine step before further police action.


“The Command does not want to join words with the victim, knowing fully well that it was an act to seek public sympathy,” the statement read. “However, the Command as confirmed by the victim in the video, responded swiftly by arresting the two suspects, recovered the arms and prevented the situation from further escalation.”


The police expressed concern over the individual’s attempt to incite the public against law enforcement and reputable citizens, warning that such actions could have serious consequences. The command reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice is served and urged the public, particularly Ndi Anambra, to be cautious of unverified accusations circulating on social media.


“This situation highlights the importance of responsible social media use and the potential consequences of spreading misinformation or making unsubstantiated claims,” SP Ikenga stated. He called on residents to condemn efforts by “unscrupulous agents” to smear the image of the police or other security agencies.


The Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining law and order in the state and encouraged citizens to verify information before sharing or acting on it. The command’s response underscores the growing challenge of combating misinformation in the digital age, particularly in a state grappling with security concerns ahead of the November 2025 governorship election.
