WOW Africa to Host 4th Annual Women’s Conference in Awka to Advance Gender Equality

AWKA, Nigeria – The Worldwide Organisation for Women (WOW) Africa, a leading non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG5) – Gender Equality, will host its 4th Annual Women’s Conference, The WOW Conversations 004, on May 24, 2025, in Awka, Anambra State. This pivotal event builds on insights from the 69th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW69), held in March 2025 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, to address critical challenges facing women and girls in Nigeria and across Africa.


Themed Beyond Boundaries: Women, Effective Visions, and Capacities for Global Change, the conference will focus on dismantling systemic barriers, including cultural stereotypes, social stratification, and violence against women and girls. Attorney Amaka Akudinobi, Executive Director of WOW Africa, stated, “The WOW Conversations 004 provides a vital platform to tackle pressing issues affecting Nigerian women and girls, such as limited access to education, health disparities, and underrepresentation in governance. We aim to foster inclusive societies by promoting women’s empowerment and resilient communities through family-centered initiatives.”


Ify Aronu-Okafor, Director of Media for WOW Africa, emphasized the event’s significance, noting, “This conference is a call to action to challenge harmful gender norms and drive sustainable change. By bringing together diverse voices, we aim to create actionable strategies that empower women and girls to thrive without the constraints of systemic inequality.”


The conference will feature an esteemed lineup of speakers, including Keynote Speaker Ngozi Anuli Iwouno, Esq., mni, Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Awka; Dr. Ifeoma Ezinne Odinye, Deputy Director, Centre for Gender Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; and Mrs. Edith Ikenye, Head of Product and Market Development, Anambra State Coordinating Office, National Export Promotion Council (NEPC). These thought leaders will drive discussions on women’s education, health, political participation, governance, social justice, poverty alleviation, and youth empowerment.


The event is expected to attract distinguished attendees, including policymakers, community leaders, and advocates, fostering impactful dialogue and collaboration. WOW Africa remains steadfast in its mission to promote gender equality and empower women and girls to achieve their full potential, free from stereotypes, violence, and structural barriers.

Nimo Community Protests Over Youth’s Death, Cites Traditional Ruler’s Alleged Role

By O'star Eze, Nimo, Nigeria May 12, 2025 Youths in Nimo, a town in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria, protested peacefully on Saturday, May 10, 2025, following the death of Ifeanyi Odibelu. The protesters claimed that the traditional ruler, Igwe Maximus Ike Oliobi, and two others, Anayo Mbanugo and Emeka Abada, alias Akuamia, were involved in Odibelu’s death. The demonstration was disrupted when security personnel reportedly used tear gas and, according to some accounts, live ammunition to disperse the crowd. The protesters stated that Odibelu was detained on April 25, 2025, and released on May 3. He died the following day. Carrying placards, the group demanded explanations from Igwe Oliobi, Mbanugo, and Abada regarding the circumstances of Odibelu’s detention and death.
