Chief Dr. Ebuka Onunkwo Shares Journey from Motor Parts Trade to Oil and Gas Success

By O'star Eze

In a recent interview at his country home, Chief Dr. Ebuka Onunkwo, a prominent businessman, philanthropist, and frontline All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) aspirant for the Anambra South Senatorial by-election, revealed insights into his remarkable transition from motor spare parts trading to establishing Seahorse Lubricant Industries Ltd., a leading oil and gas company.

Reflecting on his early career, Onunkwo recounted his time as a motor spare parts dealer in Cotonou, Benin Republic, where he mentored numerous young men, most of whom are from Anambra South, guiding them from apprentices to successful entrepreneurs in the trade. "I trained many young men to excel as motor spare parts dealers," he stated. When he decided to switch to oil and gas sector, Onunkwo made a bold move by distributing his entire new motor spare parts assets to the remaining apprentices at that time and added more cash to boost their businesses.

"I instructed them to take stock of all my shops in Cotonou and lock them up," he explained. "After they submitted their records, I invited their parents and shared the shops and their contents equally among them." Today, one of these former apprentices is reportedly the wealthiest new motor spare parts dealer in Cotonou and the whole of Benin Republic, a testament to Onunkwo’s generosity and foresight.

Chief Onunkwo expanded into importation of lubricants, which lasted for many years until 2015. In 2015, Onunkwo registered Seahorse Lubricant Industries Ltd., and by 2017, the company began manufacturing at its factory at Ozubulu in Anambra South. Under his leadership, Seahorse has gained recognition for its high-quality engine oil, cementing its place in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. Beyond business, Onunkwo’s philanthropy has left a lasting impact on Anambra South. His contributions include constructing an ashphalted road connecting Ihiala and Ekwusigo Local Government Areas, named in his honour by the people of the area.

Onunkwo has also invested in education, sponsoring students of Community Secondary School, Ihembosi, and upgrading the school’s infrastructure. Additionally, he has supported underprivileged young men by sponsoring their relocation to foreign countries for employment opportunities, many of whom are now successful.

Speaking on his senatorial ambition, Onunkwo emphasized his desire for a broader platform to serve Anambra South. "My goal is to make a greater impact in our communities," he affirmed. As he seeks the support of his constituents in the upcoming by-election, Onunkwo’s track record as a businessman and philanthropist continues to inspire widespread support.
