Heartbreak in Anambra: Seven Families Left Homeless in Court-Ordered Eviction

Awka, Anambra State Capital – July 31, 2025 – The heart of Awka was shattered this morning as seven families were abruptly rendered homeless following a court-ordered eviction along Secretariat Road. A court bailiff, accompanied by police officers and workmen, descended on a residential and commercial property, forcibly removing belongings and leaving lives in disarray under a dreary, drizzling sky.


The scene was one of despair as mattresses, furniture, and personal treasures were unceremoniously tossed onto the rain-soaked road. Children, their faces etched with confusion and fear, huddled in nearby shops, watching helplessly as their homes were dismantled. The cold morning rain mingled with tears, soaking household items and food supplies, while families stood powerless, their dreams washed away.


Speaking to this correspondent, the court bailiff revealed that the eviction was carried out on the orders of a court ruling in favor of the Awka Catholic Diocese, though the details of the dispute remained unclear. For the families affected, the legalities mattered little compared to the devastation of losing their homes.


One tenant, his voice trembling with anguish, shared his story of loss. “I paid ₦700,000 for two years’ rent on July 2nd, 2025,” he said, his eyes fixed on the scattered remnants of his livelihood. “Now, everything is gone. Where do we go from here?” His words echoed the sentiments of others, who watched as their shops were broken into and their possessions exposed to the elements.


Onlookers, moved by the families’ plight, stepped in to help, scrambling to relocate belongings to safer spots. Yet, their efforts could only do so much to shield the victims from the rain and the crushing weight of uncertainty.


As the drizzle continued to fall, so did the spirits of those left stranded. This is not just a story of eviction but of shattered hopes, displaced children, and a community grappling with the human cost of a court’s decision. More details will follow as this heartbreaking situation unfolds.
