NUJ FCT Council Honours CP Ikioye Orutugu as Best Crime Fighter - Man of the Year 2025

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has conferred the prestigious “Best Crime Fighter – Man of the Year 2025” award on CP Ikioye Orutugu, Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to security and public safety.

The award was presented during the FCT Press Week Lecture and Awards Ceremony held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, themed *Journalism in a Changing World: Press Freedom, Media, Democracy, and Society*.

The ceremony, attended by dignitaries including the Inspector General of Police, represented by Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, and the Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone 7, represented by ACP Odugbesan O., celebrated CP Orutugu’s exceptional leadership and strategic approach to crime prevention.

The NUJ FCT Council commended his professionalism, transparency, and unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law, which have significantly restored public confidence and improved security across Anambra State.

Since assuming office on February 10, 2025, CP Orutugu has led the Anambra State Police Command to remarkable achievements, including a dramatic reduction in violent crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and cultism.

His initiatives, including the “Udo Ga Achi” security operation and collaboration with sister agencies like the Military, DSS, Nigerian Navy, Civil Defence, and Anambra Vigilante Group, have curtailed the notorious sit-at-home order and dismantled criminal syndicates. Notably, the Command reported a month of zero gunshots in March 2025, a milestone reflecting Orutugu’s proactive policing strategies. His efforts also include community-oriented initiatives, such as the Police Safe School Initiative and retraining programs for vigilante operatives, enhancing local security frameworks.

In its citation, the NUJ FCT Council highlighted CP Orutugu’s ability to foster inter-agency synergy and community policing, which have made Anambra a safer state. The award follows a previous recognition by Pechilly Investigative Limited in May 2025, where Orutugu was named the 2025 Best Crime Fighter Man of the Year in Anambra after a rigorous nationwide voting process by security experts.

Accepting the award, CP Orutugu dedicated the honour to the gallant officers and men of the Anambra State Police Command, as well as sister agencies, for their relentless efforts in ensuring safety. “This recognition is a testament to our collective dedication to serve the people of Anambra State,” he said. He reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining peace and security, urging residents to continue supporting the police by providing actionable information to combat crime.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Command, expressed gratitude to the NUJ FCT Council for the recognition, emphasizing that it underscores the Command’s commitment to professionalism and excellence. He assured the public of continued efforts to maintain a secure environment for all residents and visitors in Anambra State.

The event, graced by senior police officers and stakeholders, highlighted the critical role of media-police collaboration in promoting accurate crime reporting and fostering public trust.
