Anambra Police Nab Four Suspects, Recover Vandalized High-Tension Cables in Onitsha, Obosi Operations

The Anambra State Police Command has made significant strides in its ongoing battle against vandalism and sabotage of public infrastructure, arresting four suspects and recovering vandalized high-tension cables and transformer parts in separate operations in Onitsha and Obosi.


On August 21, 2025, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, acting on credible intelligence, raided a hideout along Atani Road, Onitsha.


 Three suspects, identified as Adamu Ali, 25, Usman Sulaiman, 22, and Isah Abdullahi, 26, were apprehended. The police recovered bags of high-tension cable wires, melted cable wires, and transformer equipment parts.


 Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects belong to a syndicate specializing in vandalizing and selling power installations, with Lagos identified as their primary market.


In a separate incident on the same day, security operatives patrolling along Ascension Anglican Church Road, Obosi, intercepted four young men carrying a suspicious black “Super Shopping” bag. Three of the suspects fled upon sighting the operatives, but one was apprehended.



 A search of the bag uncovered assorted cut-to-size armored cables, a large yellow iron cutter, a black iron cutter, an ash-colored glass cutter, one black and one yellow hand glove, a black sling, a long-sleeve shirt, two keys, and a pair of rubber slippers.



The apprehended suspect, whose identity is yet to be verified, was taken into custody. However, while being escorted to the police station, he attempted to escape by jumping from a storey building. During efforts to re-arrest him, he sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His body has been deposited at the morgue for an autopsy.



All recovered items are in police custody, and the weapon used by the vigilante involved in the incident has been secured. The police have launched a full-scale investigation into both incidents, with efforts underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects and recover additional stolen items.



SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command, reiterated the Command’s commitment to combating vandalism. “We warn criminal elements sabotaging public utilities that the police will relentlessly pursue them,” he said. He urged residents of Anambra to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around government installations to the nearest police station.


The Anambra State Police Command continues to prioritize the protection of public infrastructure and the safety of its citizens.
