Anambra Police Warn Against Trial by Ordeal, Emphasize Legal Justice

The Anambra State Police Command has issued a stern warning to residents against engaging in the illegal practice of trial by ordeal, reiterating that ignorance of the law is no excuse for evading justice. In a statement released today, the Command emphasized that such practices are not only unlawful but also inhuman and punishable under Nigerian law.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, highlighted that trial by ordeal—forcing individuals to undergo dangerous or painful tests to prove their innocence or guilt—violates Section 207 of the Criminal Code Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria. The law categorizes participation in or subjection to such acts as a felony, with offenders facing imprisonment.

“Practices like forcing suspects to drink harmful substances, dip their hands in boiling water, or endure violent tests to ‘prove’ survival are illegal and will not be tolerated,” the statement read. The Command urged residents to seek justice through legal courts rather than resorting to harmful traditional practices.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, assured the public that the Command remains committed to upholding the law without bias, prioritizing the safety, dignity, and rights of all citizens. He warned that anyone found engaging in trial by ordeal would face severe legal consequences.

The public is encouraged to report such unlawful acts to the nearest police station or via the Command’s Control Number (07039194332) or the PRO’s line (08039334002).

The Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining security and enforcing the law to ensure a safe environment for all residents.
