Anambra State Police Command Refutes Claims of Political Assassinations

The Anambra State Police Command has strongly debunked a report by Punch Newspapers alleging that the state recorded 14 cases of political assassinations between 2022 and 2024. In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command described the claims as "false, misleading, and unfounded," attributing them to the imagination of the report's author, Mr. Salaudeen Hashim.


The Command clarified that while Anambra has experienced some security incidents, these were not politically motivated or targeted at specific individuals, tribes, or social groups. Instead, they were perpetrated by criminal elements posing as agitators and other non-state actors. The police, in collaboration with other security agencies, have been proactive in confronting and dismantling these threats, significantly reducing violent crimes in the state.


The statement also dismissed the report’s claim that certain Local Government Areas, including Ihiala, Ogbaru, Nnewi South, Orumba North, and Onitsha North, were high-risk zones where elections could not hold. The Command noted that these areas recently hosted peaceful Anambra South Senatorial and State House of Assembly bye-elections, contradicting the publication’s narrative.


Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, emphasizing that Anambra remains one of the most peaceful states in the South-East. He urged the media to avoid sensational reporting that could incite fear or misrepresent the state’s security situation.


The Command called on residents to disregard the false claims and continue partnering with security agencies by providing credible information to sustain peace and security in Anambra State.
