Seven Suspected Cultists Arrested During Initiation Ritual in Abagana Ahead of Anambra Governorship Election

In a significant security operation aimed at ensuring a peaceful Anambra Governorship Election scheduled for November 8, 2025, a joint security team comprising operatives from the Special Anti-Cult Squad (SPACS) Enugu-Ukwu and Agunechemba Vigilante Operatives arrested seven suspected Black Axe Confraternity members. 


The arrests occurred in the early hours of Sunday, October 26, 2025, during an initiation ceremony at a bush in Obinagu, Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area.


The suspects, all males aged between 19 and 29 years, are identified as Ugorji Emmanuel (29), Ogamba Chinuike Anthony (22), Chibuzor Agudiegu (25), Destiny Okasi (22), Udewulu Nzube (19), Ifeanyi Anikpe (21), and Sunday Akuma (20). 


Items recovered at the scene included a 25-litre keg containing a red liquid substance, red ritual cloth, two wooden drums, and footwear belonging to the suspects and their accomplices.


The initiation was reportedly linked to grooming the suspects for election-related thuggery expected in Njikoka and Anaocha Local Government Areas. 


Upon spotting the security operatives, the suspects attempted to flee but were captured after a brief pursuit.


An investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate and uncover additional cult cells in the area.


Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, PhD, FWC, MNIPS, emphasized the Command's zero-tolerance stance on activities threatening peace during the election period. 


He urged parents, community leaders, and youth groups to intensify moral guidance and curb involvement in cultism and political violence. 


The public was also called upon to provide credible information to aid law enforcement in crime prevention and criminal apprehension.


Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the operation and appeals for continued community cooperation.
