Soludo Urges Anambra Communities to Adopt Obosi’s Empowerment Model To Combat Poverty And Crime

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has called on communities across the state to replicate the Obosi One Household, Two Skills Empowerment Programme (OBISEP) as part of efforts to tackle poverty and crime through youth empowerment.


Speaking through the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, at the graduation of 350 OBISEP beneficiaries held over the week in Obosi, Idemili North LGA, Soludo commended the community for aligning with his administration’s “One Youth, Two Skills” initiative. 


He described the project as a model of community-driven development that promotes his vision of a liveable and prosperous Anambra.


Dr. Mefor stressed that eradicating poverty and insecurity requires joint efforts between government and communities. He urged other towns to emulate Obosi by establishing similar training programmes to equip youths with productive skills.


According to him, empowering one hundred skilled youths per community each year would, in ten years, significantly reduce hunger and joblessness across the 179 communities in Anambra State.


Welcoming guests, the Chairman of the ODU Skills Acquisition and Palliative Committee, Nze Chisom Onugha, who initiated OBISEP, said the project was designed to curb youth unemployment and its associated social vices and thanked partners, trainers, and the Obosi Development Union Worldwide (ODU) for their support.


Onugha noted that 350 youths were trained in various trades including ICT, fashion, catering, and hairdressing. He reaffirmed the community’s commitment to expanding the programme to empower more families and promote peace and development.


The President General of ODU Worldwide, Ambassador Chimezie Obi, appreciated Governor Soludo for involving Ndi Obosi in his administration and described OBISEP as a testament to self-help and partnership with government. He pledged continued collaboration with the state to promote youth empowerment.


Ambassador Obi congratulated the graduands, urging them to use their new skills to establish small businesses and create jobs within the community. He also encouraged Obosi residents to support the continuity of the “Solution Administration.”


Representing the traditional ruler, Eze Iweka III, Chief Sir Okechukwu Mgbemena praised OBISEP as a laudable initiative and prayed for the success of the graduands. He called on the state government to provide logistics and support for other communities wishing to adopt the model.


Some beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the life-changing opportunity and pledged to apply their skills productively. Trainers, including Ms. Blessing Okonkwo, commended their discipline and called for sustained support to make the scheme continuous and scalable.


OBISEP, launched in 2023, initially enrolled 700 trainees, with 350 completing vocational and entrepreneurship training. The programme, run in partnership with SMEDAN, offered 31 skill areas such as confectionery, solar installation, ICT, cosmetology, poultry, and fashion.


The ceremony featured exhibitions by graduates, presentation of certificates and cheques, and an award to Nze Chisom Onugha for outstanding community service. 


Dignitaries who graced the event included SMEDAN State Manager, Engr. Chito Onuzulike, Mrs. Ebele Ononihu of the Ministry of Education and Hon. Tony Ebulue, the Vice President General of Obosi Development Union Worldwide (ODU)
