Your era is over, we owe you nothing, Anambra NYCN Tells Ex President, Sukubo

The Anambra State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has reaffirmed its unwavering position rejecting any form of tenure elongation for national officers of the Council, as well as any attempt to amend the constitutionally recognised age bracket for youth membership.


Recall that the leadership of the NYCN in Anambra State had, earlier in September 2025, publicly rejected the proposed Tenure Elongation Congress slated for Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The congress, which eventually held on Sunday, 20th September 2025, sought to expand the official age bracket of youths within the NYCN from the statutory 18–35 years to 45 years, contrary to existing legislation and established norms.


The Anambra NYCN’s earlier statement—jointly signed by pioneer State Chairman Chief Obumnike Asuzu (1996–2006), Dr. Nwabufo Nwankwo (2006–2013), Comrade Frank Maduka (2013–2017), and the incumbent State Chairman, Comrade Surveyor Obi Emeka Chukwudi had also congratulated the former NYCN National President, Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, on the successful completion of his second tenure.


However, in what has been described as a retaliatory move, the former NYCN President, Sukubo, purportedly announced the illegal suspension of Surveyor Obi as Anambra NYCN State Chairman and attempted to impose an acting State Chairman.


“Our only crime is insisting on doing the right thing” - Obi


Responding in a fresh statement, the Anambra State NYCN Chairman, Surveyor Comrade Obi Emeka Chukwudi, stated that the only offence his administration committed was standing for truth, legality, and respect for the NYCN constitution.


According to Obi, Sukubo had completed his second and final term as President and a new national leadership has already emerged. He described any attempt to destabilise the NYCN in Anambra State as “dead on arrival”, insisting that the welfare and advancement of Anambra youths remain his administration’s priority.


Obi, whose tenure has only seven months life's span , further expressed concern that certain individuals within the Anambra NYCN, who are no longer qualified to hold any elective position due to age, are the same persons championing internal crisis and undermining the peace his administration has restored.


Alignment with Federal Ministry of Youth Development


The Anambra NYCN reiterated that the State Chapter remains solidly aligned with the position of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, which has consistently opposed tenure elongation and is committed to restoring sanity, constitutionality, and discipline within the NYCN structure nationwide.

“Sukubo’s efforts to destabilize the NYCN in Anambra can best be described as a vendetta movement. Anambra youths are wiser and cannot be manipulated into becoming tools in the hands of the former NYCN President,” Obi said.


He stressed that overaged individuals within the NYCN must transition to their constitutionally designated roles as advisers, rather than causing division or attempting to hijack the Council’s leadership processes.


 Permanent youth council officials must move on


The Anambra NYCN insisted that the era when overaged or expired officials manipulated youth structures for personal benefit is over. The Council urged such persons to pursue gainful engagements appropriate for their age, instead of attempting to distort the youth movement for selfish interests.
